Meet the DJ's - Mike Wessels |
| |
Mike's a farm boy from Blue Earth, Minn. He originally got into radio
as a sports play-by-play man and still does some sports for The Sportsfan.
Mike is the Program Director for The Blaze. He came to Northern California
in 1987 and so far, nobody's told him he has to leave. He's an avid
waterskier, loves baseball & hoops, rides a lot of bike and tends
to read murder mysteries or horror stories. Favorite C.D.s are "Desperado"
by the Eagles, "Del Rio, Texas 1959" by Radney Foster, "Ten
Feet Tall & Bulletproof" by Travis Tritt, "Reckless
Kelly Was Here" and Chris Knights self-titled CD. Also a big
fan of Kevin Welsh, Alison Moorer, Patty Loveless, Charlie Robison,
The Dixie Chicks, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Gary Allen and Montgomery-Gentry.
Best concerts Mike's ever been to were Garth's last show in Sacramento,
the first Brooks & Dunn Neon Circus, Hank Williams the 3rd at
the Crazy Horse, Miranda Lambert at the Gold Country Casino and, of
course, any time The Danger Bros. perform. Want to make him happy,
bring him a Chocolate Chip cookie. One major pet peeve: People who
say they're going to do something, then, unapologetically, make no
effort to honor the commitment.
Message from The Blaze Program Director, Mike Wessels
I admit I'm not an old-time country guy from the 50's or 60's. I
got into country when I started listening to Willie Nelson, George
Strait and Alabama in about 1981. I met Reba about the same time
and really got fired up about country when I heard Randy Travis
and Steve Earle. I spent 8 years in Wyoming hanging out with working
cowboys. (In Wyo., if you aren't a cowboy, you probably work for
the government.) While hanging around those guys, plus some of the
cowboys I know around here, I've learned something about real cowboys.
Above all, a cowboy is his own man. The real cowboys don't worry
about fitting somebody else's image of what they should be. I've
found that the real cowboys out there don't much care if your hair
is long or short, if you ride a horse or a bike, they don't even
care if you wear an earring or tattoo. Hell, some of the most hardcore
cowboy's I've ever met had both. What I've found out from all these
years around cowboys and the country life-style is this. If you're
loyal, willing to put in a good, hard, honest day's work, treat
people fair and love your country, hat or no hat, you can call yourself
a real cowboy. If anybody tries to say you aren't country because
you don't look country, just realize, they obviously don't really
understand. It's in your heart & soul, everything else is window-dressing.
Thanks for listening to our radio station, I really appreciate it.
